Ivy Tech Transfers

IUPUI and the IU School of Social Work have a special agreement for students seeking to transfer from the Ivy Tech Human Services Associate degree program to the BSW program at IUPUI.  This 2 + 2 program would allow FULL-TIME students to complete their BSW degree in four semesters (or the equivalent in part-time semester credits) including one summer of six credits,  upon completion of four FULL-TIME semesters (or their equivalent in part-time semester credits) at Ivy Tech.

Step #1:  APPLY TO IUPUI

The first step in moving from Ivy Tech to IUPUI is to APPLY for admission to IUPUI.  YOU MUST be admitted to IUPUI to be able to apply to the School of Social Work.  Ivy Tech and IUPUI have developed the Passport program to make this as smooth as possible.  The dates for IUPUI admission are below:

IUPUI Admission Application Deadlines

Summer Session I

March 15

Summer Session II

May 1

Fall

May 1

Spring

November 1

For more information about applying to IUPUI, visit the Passport website at http://www.iupui.edu/%7eivy/.   During this transfer process, your credits will be reviewed and decisions will be made about how courses you took at Ivy Tech will transfer to IUPUI.  Please contact the Passport program at the above website for further information.  NOTE:  Please note that it may take 4 to 6 weeks to process your admission to IUPUI, so make sure you begin the process EARLY to be able to begin taking classes at IUPUI, as well as for the admissions process for the BSW program.  Also, the maximum number of credits hours which may be transferred is 64.

STEP #2:  APPLY TO THE BSW PROGRAM

After you have applied for admission to IUPUI, you may begin the process of applying to the BSW program (note that you may BEGIN preparing your application to the BSW program before you have been formally admitted to IUPUI, but you cannot be admitted to the BSW program UNTIL you have been accepted to IUPUI).

Enrollment in the BSW program requires formal admission to the Indiana University School of Social Work. The following are the minimum requirements for consideration for admission to the program:

  • Regular admission to IUPUI.
  • Completion of a minimum of 12 credit hours.  Although we encourage early application, advanced students may also apply.
  • Satisfactory completion (grade of C or better) of the required course S141 Introduction to Social Work.   Ivy Tech students who have completed the HMS101 PLUS HMS279 (“the bridge course”) are given transfer credit for this course.
  • A minimum CUMULATIVE (this includes all GPAs from other colleges and universities that the student has attended) grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Completion of Application for Admission to the BSW Program packet.
  • Evidence of characteristics or potential required of competent social work practitioners as defined in the mission statement of the School.  Such evidence may be derived from application materials, letters of reference, pertinent work or volunteer experience, and performance in S141 Introduction to Social Work.

Applications must be received by November 1st to be considered for the Spring semester and by May 15th to be considered for the Fall semester.  Applications received after those dates may be reviewed depending upon availability for spaces in the program but are not guaranteed review for the following semester.

Please make sure you review the APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS prior to completing the APPLICATION.  In complete applications will be returned.

STEP #3: PLAN YOUR PROGRAM

Upon admission to the BSW Program, we will create an individualized educational plan for you to complete all the general and supportive requirements, as well as the professional social work required coursework, to be ready to graduate.  In the application packet, you will be asked to specify the number of credits you wish to take each semester, as well as whether you choose to take summer courses.  Based on those choices, your educational plan will be created and discussed with you at the New BSW Student Orientation.  You will also be able to register for classes at that time.

If you plan to complete the BSW requirements in four semesters and one summer session (the 2 + 2 plan), you must begin your Junior-level required BSW course in the Fall semester, as our courses are sequenced.   The 2 + 2 program plan is detailed here:  (Link to Suggested Education Schedule)

NOTE:  This plan is VERY demanding and NOT recommended for students who are employed more than half time and/or have significant life responsibilities outside of the classroom.  Students may “lighten the load” for some (but not all semesters) by taking courses in the spring or summer BEFORE their Junior-level Fall required social work courses, however, this requires early admission to IUPUI and sometimes the BSW program for required BSW courses and electives.

CHOOSING A PART-TIME OPTION:

Many students at IUPUI do need to work more than part-time and also have life responsibilities such as parenting and other care-giving.  We have developed a part-time schedule which would allow Ivy Tech students to complete the program in six semesters, with choices about summer coursework, which may include adding a certificate or preparing for the MSW program.  This program plan is detailed here:  (Link to Part-time Suggested Educational Schedule).   This should be the PREFERRED OPTION for students who work over 20 hours per week or have significant responsibilities outside the classroom.  Social work courses at the 300 and 400 level are demanding, practica require 15 to 20 hours PER WEEK, and just transferring to a new campus is a challenge in and of itself.  We want each student to be successful in the BSW program and we hope you will carefully consider how to maximize your success in the program.

We know it may be challenging to move between two large institutions, such as Ivy Tech and IUPUI.  Click here to access the document we have created with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We look forward to working with you in the Admissions process and welcoming you to the BSW Program.  For more information on the BSW program itself, other tabs on the BSW website may be very helpful to you as well.  Thanks for your interest in the Indiana University School of Social Work BSW Program at IUPUI!
