Chan is one of the School of Social Work students who spend their Saturdays at the Indiana University Student Outreach Clinic on the eastside of Indianapolis. The clinic is operated by students from the IU Schools of Social Work, Law, Medicine, Dentistry and pharmacy students from Butler University. As a Schweitzer Fellow, Chan will continue her work to improve the health and well-being of low-income people by addressing unmet needs related to healthcare, education, employment, housing, medical insurance and nutrition. She plans to integrate the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Kids Countdown, a health promotion initiative based on evidence-based messaging emphasizing health nutritional choices and behaviors. “The Schweitzer Fellowship simultaneously promotes Schweitzer’s legacy and addresses a critical gap in today’s health care landscape by equipping emerging professionals with the tools to address not only clinical health issues, but also the social determinants of health,” said ASF President Lachlan Forrow, MD, Director of Ethics and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Last year Tori Campbell, an MSW student at IUSB, and Meredith Upchurch, an MSW student at IUPUI, were named Indiana Schweitzer fellows.
The Indiana Schweitzer Fellows will join about 230 other Schweitzer Fellows from around the country who will partner with local community-based organizations to develop and implement yearlong, mentored service projects that improve the health and well-being of underserved people. This work is done on top of their regular graduate school responsibilities.
