Office of Educational Assessment

The Office of Educational Assessment (OEA) of the Indiana University School of Social Work
offers curriculum analysis services to schools and departments of social work throughout the
United States. Social Work programs will find their individualized, multi-dimensional Curriculum
Analysis Reports (CARS) invaluable for the purposes of quality improvement and curriculum
development, and to complement self-study processes associated with CSWE educational
policies and standards. Staffed by an experienced cadre of trained teaching-learning
professionals, the Office of Educational Assessment uses The Curriculum Analyzer*
software to facilitate curriculum analysis on the basis of programs’ organizational goals, academic
program objectives, CSWE content areas and foundation objectives, and the learning objectives
included within all required social work courses.
How does this work?
Social work programs submit relevant educational documentation in electronic form to the
OEA for examination by independent reviewers and processing through The Curriculum
Analyzer* software program. Review processes are designed to enhance the reliability of
findings. Indeed, reliable results are extraordinarily difficult to obtain through traditional, internal,
self-administered curriculum reviews. As an external agent, the Office of Educational Assessment
seeks to provide genuinely independent and objective curriculum analysis. Programs may expect a
a final Curriculum Analysis Report within 90 days of receipt of their electronically formatted date.
Fees for the curriculum analysis service vary according to the size and complexity of your academic
programs (e.g., BSW, MSW foundation, MSW concentrations, Ph.D.), the overall number of required
social work course objectives, the array of dimensions selected for analysis, and the form in which
data are submitted. An additional charge is assessed for information requiring special handling. The fee
for the standard analysis of one program’s curriculum (e.g., BSW) containing up to 100 course objectives
begins at $795.

Consultation Services
In response to growing demand for information and guidance about educational assessment from
schools and departments of social work throughout the country, Dr. Barry Cournoyer of the
Office of Educational Assessment is pleased to offer his services as an educational assessment
consultant. Individualized consultation naturally complements the Curriculum Analysis and
other educational assessment services offered through the Office. Such expanded services are
warranted due to the growth of the Office’s educational assessment activities and location to new
offices within the School of Social Work.
Dr. Cournoyer, lead developer of The Curriculum Analyzer, a proprietary software program that
facilitates comprehensive analysis of social work curricula based upon multiple dimensions, co-
author of The Social Work Portfolio: Planning, Documenting, and Assessing Lifelong
Learning in a Dynamic Profession (2002, Brooks/Cole-Thomson), popular speaker and
workshop leader on the topic of educational assessment in social work, and a coordinator of the
Office of Educational Assessment serves as the primary consultant.
Many Social Work programs find individualized consultation an efficient, effective, and relatively
inexpensive means to design, develop, refine, and implement educational assessment plans and
strategies in their efforts to improve programmatic quality, enhance student learning, and address
CSWE educational policies and standards.
How does this work?
Social work programs seeking consultation services should contact Dr. Barry Cournoyer at
317-274-6708 or bcourno@iupui.edu to discuss their educational assessment needs and
preferences. Fees for consultation services vary according to the size and complexity of the
academic programs (e.g., BSW, MSW foundation, MSW concentrations, Ph.D.) and the
estimated amount of time and resources needed to provide high quality consultation.
