Advances in Social Work journal cover

Advances in Social Work is now at a new website:  http://journals.iupui.edu/index.php/advancesinsocialwork

As an author submitting your manuscript to Advances, we would ask that you do the following:

  1. Before logging into our website, you should prepare your manuscript.  Please ensure that the manuscript has the following formatting:
    1. The manuscript should be sanitized so that the author(s) name(s) are not given.  Please change all author’s names to “X” for references and just deleted for author identification.  For example, if your manuscript says something like “this study is based on a larger study by the authors (Daley, 1999)” you would change it to ““this study is based on a larger study by the authors (X)”.  Once the manuscript has been reviewed and a decision made on the manuscript being accepted (or not), the final version of the manuscript can replace the references with the actual names.  Please ensure the manuscript has an abstract and keywords at the beginning of the manuscript.
    2. The author should send a separate title page with title, authors (including full contact information), and any special information (i.e. “this study was funded by the Lilly Foundation”).  This information should be sent to the editor’s e-mail address.  Send this file to wbarton@iupui.edu .
    3. The manuscript should be in Word for Windows format with 12 font, single space.  Tables and figures should be embedded in the manuscript NOT placed as addendums at the end of the manuscript.  Manuscript should be no more than 20 pages long though longer manuscripts are considered.
    4. Make sure you remove the identifying information in the file properties too.  This can be done (as described in the file “ensuring a blind review”) as follows:

“To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review for submission to this journal, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties:

The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc.

With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.

With PDFs, the authors' names should also be removed from Document Properties found under File on Adobe Acrobat's main menu”.

    1. PLEASE proof your manuscript.  Most common mistakes are references that are in text but not in the reference list (or vice versa).  Please do one last check of your references before you send in the manuscript.
  1. Once the manuscript is ready to submit, you can log in at http://journals.iupui.edu/index.php/advancesinsocialwork  (PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MAY GET A WARNING NOTICE THAT THE WEBSITE IS NOT SECURE YET, SELECT THE CHOICE THAT SAY CONTINUE ON.  YOU ALSO GET AN “INCORRECT PASSWORD” THAT ONLY NEEDS YOU TO RE-ENTER YOUR PASSWORD.)
    1. Select the “register” choice at the top of the webpage
    2. Complete the information in the profile form
    3. Select under “register as” the choice of “author”.  NOTE:  If you are interested in being a reviewer, you should check the “reviewer” choice too.
    4. Once you have registered, you will see a new screen.  On that screen will be “Advances in Social Work” and “author”.  Click on the “author” choice.  You will be taken to a new screen with “click here to start the submission process”.  Click on that choice.
    5. A new screen will pop up with information and a submission checklist.  You must check each of the items on the checklist.  There is information that you can click on for some of the items (i.e. “author’s guidelines”).  You then select “articles” for the section choice.
    6. At the bottom of the page is “save and continue”.  Click on that button when you are done.
    7. The next screen (called “metadata”) is where you add additional authors, add the title & abstract, and place the keywords (called subject classification).  Other information (i.e. discipline, funding source) can be added in appropriate boxes.  When you have entered the pertinent information, click “save and continue”.
    8. You then upload the manuscript where it says “upload submission file” by choosing “browse” and finding your file to upload.  Notice that the file is given an anonymous number to protect the author from being identified.  NOTE:  You can add any supplementary files (i.e. tables or figures) so that we can have the original figures or tables in can we need to do any editing changes due to formatting requirements.  When you have entered the pertinent information, click “save and continue”.
    9. The final step is to see the manuscript submitted.  Click “finish submission” and you are done.  If there are any flaws in the submission process, you can click “cancel” and start the process again.  Once you have clicked “finish submission”, the process is done and you will be sent an e-mail confirming your submission.
    10. After you have submitted the manuscript, you can check on the status and where it is at in the review process by logging in as the author.

NOTE:  This process is just getting started by the editing staff at Advances so please be patient.  Once everyone gets familiar with the process, it should go smoother.  Let the editor (WBARTON@iupui.edu) know if you have trouble with the submission process.   Thanks!

Editor, Advances in Social Work
