Patients Readmitted to Substance Dependence Treatment

Substance dependence is a chronic illness for certain individuals requiring re-admissions to treatment based on the re-emergence of symptoms.  This project, funded by a Grant-In-Aid for Research through the Office for Professional Development, will establish a database of patients re-admitted to substance abuse treatment in order to understand this patient population.  Data will be collected from medical records of patients who are re-admitted to the same facility within six months.  Descriptive statistics and comparisons between groups (gender, drug usage, diagnoses, physical symptoms, and other demographic data), family history of substance dependence with days in treatment, number of admissions within 6 months, age of onset, and Global Assessment Functioning (DSM-IV, 1994) upon admission will provide an understanding of patients who are readmitted to treatment.
