Rebeca (Carmen) Rodriguez, a Bachelor of Social Work student at IUPUI, has received the Student Inspirational Woman as part of the 2011 Women’s History Leadership Awards.
Rebeca will also receive the 2011 Latina Leader Award from La Plaza.
The student inspirational award was presented as part of the 2011 Women’s History Leadership Awards by the IUPUI Office for Women. Dr. Carmen Luca Sugawara received her Outstanding IUPUI Woman Leader in the “Newcomer” faculty category at the same ceremony.
“Rebeca has been a model scholar with the Norman Brown Diversity and Leadership Program (NBDLP), consistently maintaining strong study habits as she maintains a 3.199 GPA,” Gloria L. Quiroz, Academic Advisor at the School of Informatics, wrote in a letter nominating Rebeca for the inspirational award. “Last year, she earned the Most Improved GPA among all the NBDLP scholars. Her first semester at IUPUI, she struggled choosing a major and making the transition from high school to college. She took full advantage of the resources we discussed and earned stellar summer grades to stay above the 3.0 requirement.”
Quiroz noted that in addition to being a full-time student, Rebeca works on-campus as a student mentor. “In the fall she was the mentor for the Social Work learning community class. In the spring and in previous semesters, she worked with the Bepko Learning Center and Career Center. She is currently serving as an intern for the Indiana Latino Institute as part of the BSW degree.”
Rebeca was an active volunteer at FIESTA Indianapolis, and volunteered with the La Plaza LILLY summer program for middle-school youth. She is also a leader, serving in her second term as an officer for the Latino Student Association (LSA). “As part of LSA she has been an active member of the Cesar Chavez Dinner planning committee for two years. This year she served as one of the masters of ceremony for the celebration dinner. She has been an integral student member in planning the Latino Student Welcome events the last two years in collaboration with the Latino Faculty Staff Council.” Last year she was recognized as a Rising Star in Campus and Community Life (now Office of Student Involvement).
Rebeca will receive her Latina Leader Award on April 14 at La Plaza’s annual scholarship dinner. The award recognizes a young leader for their work in the Latino community.
