Dr. Lisa McGuire, Director of the Bachelor of Social Work Program at IUPUI, will attend Harvard University's Management Development Program, an initiative designed to prepare future leaders in social work education.
Dr. McGuire is one of five social work administrators to receive a scholarship from the Council on Social Work Education to attend the two-week program at Harvard in June. CSWE is nonprofit national association representing more than 2,500 individual members, as well as graduate and undergraduate programs of professional social work education. It is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the country.
CSWE worked with Harvard to develop the management program, said Indiana University School of Social Work Dean Michael Patchner. “The CSWE was interested in creating mechanisms for preparing the next generation of social work education leaders,” the dean said. The Harvard program is designed to provide leadership skills and a management philosophy he explained. “I am delighted Lisa is going,” Dean Patchner said. “I encouraged her to attend. She has excellent administrative skills and she is destined to be a future leader in social work education.
The program is designed to identify the characteristics of effective leadership in higher education, develop and manage effective leadership teams, analyze financial data and understand how funds are allocated and budgets are created, identify the conditions – both individual and institutional – that increase opportunities for professional development and personal transformation and function as an effective change agent.
Dr. McGuire became director of the BSW program on the IUPUI campus almost two years ago and is looking forward to enhancing her management skills. “I have never had any training for administration in higher education. That was never part of my education,” Dr. McGuire said. “I am so excited.”
