Richard A. Reed, whose social work career has taken him from working with veterans in Indianapolis to the White House, has received the Government Security News/Raytheon Award for Distinguished Leadership and Innovation in Public Safety and Security Award.
Reed received his BSW degree in 1995 and his MSW degree in 1996 from the Indiana University School of Social Work. After receiving his MSW degree, Reed started his career with the Veterans Administration in Indianapolis
That was the beginning of more than 20 years in a variety of positions with the federal government, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the General Services Administration. He was then brought to the White House to work on the nation’s continuity policy after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and was asked to stay on by President Obama. Reed has credited his social work background for his ability to get people from competing agencies to work together.
In his current position as Deputy Assistant to the President for Homeland Security, he oversees a wide range of areas such as hazard preparedness, individual and community partnerships, resilience, critical infrastructure protection, domestic incident management, continuity of government, transportation security, border security and immigration.
In recent years he has led the federal government’s efforts to deal with a variety of disasters and emergencies such as the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, the earthquake in Haiti in 2010, the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, the Fukushima earthquake, tsunami and resulting nuclear emergency in 2010, according to the Government Security News.
Previous recipients of the award include retired Admiral Thad Allen, who led federal efforts to respond to Hurricane Katrina and the BP oil spill, Frances Townsend, a former White House homeland security advisor and retired four-star General Barry McCaffrey.
