IU School of Social Work is headquartered on the IUPUI campus with locations on 8 IU Campuses. The school also has the Department of Labor Studies
Linda Olvey, the MSW Direct Field Coordinator, has been selected to receive the Maynard K. Hine Award, which recognizes significant contributions to Indiana University-Purdue University. Olvey is a 1983 MSW graduate of the School of Social Work.
In a letter nominating Olvey, Karen Jones, the Senior Director at the IUPUI Office of Alumni Relations, noted she has known Linda as a member of the School of Social Work’s Alumni Board since 1998. Jones said she also worked withOlvey prior to 1998 when Olvey was the MSW Student Services coordinator at the School.
Olvey left the School of Social Work in 1998 to provide direct service as a social worker at the Marion County Prosecutors Office. Later she worked at The Villages and then at the Indiana Coalition against Domestic Violence.
“Linda was initially asked to join the alumni board because of her work as a staff member at the IU School of Social Work,” Jones wrote in her nominating letter. “Her strong commitment to student success was very evident in her daily work. She believed that the bond of a student continues with the school after graduation. Her addition to the alumni board has significantly increased the collaborations we have in the community, greatly enhanced our involvement with students, and strengthened the programming we provide alumni,” Jones wrote.
Jones added that Olvey has been described as someone who worked tirelessly for her clients and students she supervises. “Linda has volunteered as an alumni field instructor for almost ten years. Her volunteer role involves a great deal of time each week supervising students and following the mandates from the School of Social Work regarding supervision requirements and reporting.”
What’s more, Jones noted, Olvey’s service to alumni does not stop with her position on the School of Social Work Alumni Board of Director as she serves as the school’s representative to the Executive Council where she attends twice yearly meetings on behalf of the alumni board.
“Whether Linda is nominating alumni for awards, collaborating with faculty on projects, calling the White House to ask an alumnus to speak, organizing alumni to help with student events, or telling board members about another worthy cause they need to support, she is always representing the alumni and the school in a professional and dedicated manner.”
Olvey, along with two others, will receive their awards on Feb. 28.
