COVID-19 UPDATE FOR FIELD PRACTICUM - 3/20/2020

Dear Social Work Students,

Starting Monday, March 23rd and until Monday, April 13th, all students should suspend their participation in onsite and face-to-face field related activities.  Students should continue their alternative learning activities from home as well as participate in supervision utilizing Zoom or telephone.  If you or your field instructor would like to petition for the ability to continue providing onsite or face-to-face field related activities, please contact Stephanie Lyons, Director of Field Education at steplyon@iupui.edu or (317) 274-8468.  If you have any other questions or concerns related to your field placement, please contact your Faculty Field Liaison.

Also, in light of this change and to ensure that you are able to successfully complete your practicum, for this academic year only we are reducing the number of hours required to complete your course.

  • BSW 481/482 students who are in 482 this semester are now required to complete a total of 400 hours instead of 560
  • MSW 555 students are now required to complete 260 hours instead of 320
  • MSW students enrolled in 651/652 this semester are now required to complete 580 hours instead of 640

Please check the total number of hours completed to date and work with your Faculty Field Liaison to ensure a plan to complete the required number of field hours.

In addition to the hours required to successfully complete your field practicum course, you are still required to complete the following:

  • Timesheets submitted by the student and approved by Field Instructor
  • Draft Learning Plan submitted by student and approved by Field Instructor (Task Instructor if applicable) and Faculty Field Liaison
  • Learning Plan submitted by student and approved by Field Instructor (Task Instructor if applicable) and Faculty Field Liaison
  • Midpoint Evaluation submitted by student and approved by Field Instructor (Task Instructor if applicable) and Faculty Field Liaison (555 and 651 students only)
  • Final Evaluation submitted by student and approved Field Instructor (Task Instructor if applicable) and Faculty Field Liaison (482, 555, and 652 students only)
  • Case Presentation (if applicable)
  • Site Visit which includes the Student, Field Instructor (Task Instructor if applicable) and Faculty Field Liaison
  • Seminars - participation in all

We appreciate your professionalism and patience as we have been managing this rapidly changing situation.  We hope that this will provide you with clear direction on successfully completing your practicum.

Stephanie Lyons
