Student Integration: It’s More Than Opportunities
This workshop will demonstrate the evolution of student experiences through opportunities, engagement, involvement, and integration (Mrozinske, 2016). Recent information suggests students’ and faculty perspectives post-pandemic require creative collaborative approaches to best drive the admission, recruitment, and retention process in a way that ensures sound DEIA practices. Participants will be encouraged to use a research-based lens to reflect on the approaches used in their respective programs and identify areas of successes and growth.
Social and academic integration (e.g. Astin, 1970, 1991; Pascarella, 1980,1985; Tinto, 1975, 1982, 1993), a sense of belonging (e.g. Tovar & Simon, 2010), and the perception of being part of a community (e.g. McMillan & Chavis, 1986) have been well documented as bridges to student successes (Strayhorn, 2019). As our understanding of the importance of rooted DEIA driven practices evolves, the presentation of opportunity for students to grow personally and professionally is no longer enough.
Students are navigating complex journeys that often include full-time employment, multi-generational families requiring care, socio-economic challenges, and mental health barriers. This has only been exacerbated during the Covid-era resulting in fewer students being physically present for traditional growth opportunities (Marinoni, Van’t Land, & Jensen, 2020); Neuwirth, Jović, & Mukherji, 2021). Faced with the recent enrollment cliff, programs are re-examining approaches to outreach and student presence to be efficient and effective. This workshop proposes giving attention to intention when working with students from diverse backgrounds that will not only invite them into the social work profession but support them to matriculate and thrive upon entering the workforce.
It demonstrates how opportunity opens the door with an invitation, and how giving support for students to be seen and heard will allow them to engage. Recognition that student involvement is at the discretion of students’ availability and can be particularly challenging on heavy commuter campuses. Consideration of how involvement is defined becomes necessary. Once students have created space in their journey for involvement in social work as a career, authentic integration and inclusion allows students to evolve and thrive both personally and professionally.
This workshop will explore sub-themes such as marketing for potential students, perceived program application barriers, how and what information is disseminated to current students, student group advocacy, top-down vs. bottom-up relationship building with students, and the role of mentoring as they intersect with the process of integration.
