Donyel Byrd is an Associate Faculty with the Indiana University School of Social Work.  She has her master’s degree in social work. In 2018, Ms. Byrd was awarded the National Association of Social Workers, Indiana Chapter Social Worker of the Year.  Prior to teaching, Ms. Byrd’s practice experience included over ten years in the field of child welfare, as a family therapist providing services to children and families who were involved with the child welfare system.  She also served as a school social worker at both the elementary and high school levels. Her post-secondary teaching has spanned from introductory courses such as Diversity and the Introduction to Social Work to Social Welfare Policy, Social Work Practice and Policy in Health Care, and Community Behavior and Practice. Ms. Byrd is especially passionate about promoting equity and anti-oppressive practice in social work, health care and social work education.
