Nes, J. A. (2023). Strategies for Advancing Global Mindedness in Social Work Education. International Federation of Social Workers, International Association of Schools of Social Work, International Council for Social Welfare, Panama City, Panama.
This presentation will describe course assignments within three graduate level macro social work courses, Community and Global Theory and Practice, Social Work Practice with Organizations, Communities and Societies, and Executive Leadership Practice and this author’s delivery of the courses through unique assignments aimed at helping students embrace community-based social work approaches to addressing global social work issues, social development approaches, human rights concepts and application and learning that advances inclusive practices. The assignments and overall course delivery are consistent with the themes of the Global Agenda for Social Work and Social Development Framework for 2020-2030.
The MSW Program in Fort Wayne is situated in the midwestern part of the United States, in a politically conservative medium sized urban area that draws MSW students from the city as well as from its surrounding rural counties with varying degrees of diverse people groups. The majority of the MSW students attending this program have had limited international travel experiences and the geographic location of the program combined with the politically conservative mood of the state and the region, have influenced students’ awareness of and investment in global social issues impacting communities as well as exposure to diverse people groups. Though innovative course delivery and unique assignments, these three courses encourage students toward global mindedness, embracing diversity and culture, recognizing the value of community based social development approaches, enhanced understandings of international human rights instruments and their application, the need for global citizenship, and active use of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Workshop attendees will be provided with assignment details that can be tangibly replicated or modified for future use in social work education at undergraduate and graduate levels and adapted to individual country settings. The impact of the assignments on student learning will be shared with workshop attendees.

Nes, J. A., Khaja, K., & Hippie, J. L. (2020). Tangible Teaching Tools for Global Social Work in a Polarized World. IFSW, Calgary, Canada.
Social work education in the United States has evolved in recent years to include greater emphasis on global social work, human rights and social justice. In an effort to effectively align our curriculum with the 2015 Council on Social Work Educations Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (CSWE, 2015) pertaining to heightened emphasis on global social work practice, Indiana University School of Social Work (IUSSW) developed a required master’s level course titled Community and Global Theory and Practice which was implemented in 2018. This presentation will illustrate unique course delivery elements in three different formats (online, hybrid and face to face) on three different IUSSW campuses. Examples of easily replicated course assignments and samples of assignment work products will be provided to participants. Course assignments were designed specifically to advance student competencies in human rights and social justice, analyze key international agreements, link community and global practice to sustainable development goals and build upon capacity and international social development. Results of focus group based qualitative research of course impacts on student learning will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Develop course assignments that prepare students to engage in human rights based analysis and interventions that align with international sustainable development goals and community capacity building;
2. Develop high impact course assignments for hybrid, online and face to face formats so that teaching methodologies enhance student learning on global social issues including, but not limited to, refugee migration, poverty, human trafficking, substance abuse, natural disasters, gender violence, civil conflict and wars;
3. Develop course assignments that prepare students for competency acquisition in developing interventions shaped by cultural humility and awareness that align with international human rights declarations, covenants and treaties.

Nes, J. (2017). Statewide Recruitment. IUSSW, Indianapolis, United States.
I was asked to provide a brief presentation on my approach to statewide recruitment activities as an MSW Program Coordinator serving the Fort Wayne area. When I do recruitment it is largely for the FW program. However, there are times when I also refer students to other IUSSW programs that may better meet their needs, particularly MSW-D. This presentation provided methods of serving the school from a statewide perspective within the context of specific program recruitment.

Nes, J., Dale, M. D., & Omorayo-Adenrele, A. (2017). Preparing Social Workers for Innovative Policy Practice. IUSSW, Indianapolis, United States.
This session will provide prospective and current agency field instructors, field educators and students with simple innovative resources and approaches to prepare for active engagement in policy practice in the practicum setting. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) mandates that accredited social work programs prepare their students so that they are able to “understand that human rights and social justice, as well as social welfare and services, are mediated by policy and its implementation at the federal, state, and local levels” (CSWE, 2015). Additionally, CSWE requires that students “…understand the historical, social, cultural, economic, organizational, environmental, and global influences that affect social policy” (CSWE 2015). Thus, social work field instructors and field faculty must strive to find creative ways to infuse policy practice into field seminars and field placements at BSW and MSW levels. This workshop will highlight specific methods and activities that can be easily used to infuse policy content into social work field placements. Presenters will elaborate on a training developed by Indiana University School of Social Work to prepare field instructors how to teach policy practice to field students and will provide specific activities utilized in field seminars to advance students’ policy practice competency. Additionally, student attendees will find useful strategies they can readily incorporate into their field placements. Students and social work educators will find this session equally valuable. Qualitative feedback from social work students and agency field instructors will be shared about the effectiveness of these different approaches in infusing policy practice content.

2022 - Behavioral Health AcademyAfter launching the Behavioral Health Academy (BHA) at Park Center/Parkview Behavioral Health Institute, I gathered the team of clinicians together at Park Center and held a feedback session so that we could reflect on the first BHA cohort, examine what worked well and what didn't so that we could better prepare for 2023/2024. Developed an open ended survey that clinicians (both Field and Task Instructors) completed and summarized results for improvements for 2023/2024. -
MSW Program Coordinator
2021 - Organized all field placements for MSW studentsConducted individual interviews with all MSW students on our campus, developed three practicum planning plans (Plan A, B, and C) and secured placements that aligned with curriculum and students' needs and interests. Created new Affiliation Agreements where necessary (St. Rita's Hospital in Ohio, Allen Circuit Court Problem Solving Courts, etc.). Also did all of the behind the scenes logistics work to launch the Behavioral Health Academy with Parkview Health, Community Health and IUSSW. Also worked with students and organizations to develop employment based placements in alignment with school and CSWE expectations. -
Temporary service as external field instructor for two students in Ohio whose supervisor took an extended leave and did not return
2021 - Supplemental External Field Supervision for two studentsDue to the unusual circumstances of the employee taking an extended leave and due to HR parameters, students were left in a precarious position without clear messaging about this Field Instructor's return. I stepped in and provided weekly supervision for the students for 1-1.5 hours per week. -
External LCSW Supervision
2019 - Clinical SupervisionProvided weekly supervision for an MSW/program graduate for work towards her LCSW from Feb. 2019 - April 2020. Former student transitioned from one workplace to another where no one was on site to provide clinical supervision. Needed an additional year of clinical supervision to pursue LCSW. Supervision was weekly for one - 1.5 hours for 11 months of 2019 (roughly 50+ hours); same for 2020 up until April 15, 2020 (roughly 16+ hours). -
