Betts, R. T., & Bragg, N. (2021). Real Talk: Colorblindness and Racial Bias in Social Work. National Association of Social Workers, Indianapolis, IN.
Real Talk: Colorblindness and Racial Bias in Social Work
As racism is inarguably involved in clients’ ability and experiences in accessing community resources, the presentation will address access to community services and benefits to which social workers –the majority of whom are white- often act as gatekeepers. Discussing how colorblindness is vital for addressing our own biases as practitioners within this context, social work advocacy must start with critical self-inquiry. The presentation promotes self-awareness and cultural humility which involves a commitment to critical self-reflection, recognizing and addresses one’s own biases and challenging inequalities. A values-based social worker cannot be an advocate of social justice if they fail to examine their relationship as a practitioner to systems of racial oppression. This presentation will encourage attendees to engage in an honest reflection of their own attitudes regarding colorblindness and how these can be refined to better reflect more antiracist practice approaches. Though the presentation does not directly approach how social workers can engage in social policy change, it hopes to initiate heightened awareness of the intrinsic racism within both the language and construction of laws and policies impacting services and benefits to social work clients of color.
