Jordan Szorc
IU School of Social Work – MSW Student
Hi, my name is Jordan Szorc. I’m an MSW student at IU Northwest and graduated from IUNs BSW program in May 2019. I was working as a Substitute Teacher while being in school but have lost my job due to the schools being close. I wrote this to describe how I’m feeling during this time. It reflects on my thoughts and feelings for others and how I wish I can help.
I Feel
I honestly feel for everyone, I feel for those struggling with addiction and can’t attend their AA meetings or rehab, I feel for those children whose only love and attention came from school and now are dealing with the pain from the abuse they receive at home, I feel for those struggling with mental illness whose normal coping mechanisms were taking away from them due to lockdowns.
I feel for those who felt that things won’t go back to normal and felt suicide was the out way to peace. I feel for all those that lost their jobs and are now struggling to take care of their families and themselves. I feel for our homeless population that doesn’t have the resources to stay safe. I feel for our healthcare workers, essential workers, and college students as all their lives have become more stressful than ever.
Even though lockdowns are temporary I feel everyone’s lives have changed. We will think twice about shaking a hand, we will start to question when someone is coughing near us, we will feel we all need to overbuy in case we are put on lockdowns again, we will start to appreciate the little things like going out to eat, going to the park, just being able to go a shop for your favorite items. Our lives have changed but we can choose if we want to live in fear or live in faith. To be there for one another and to get through this together.
