SOCIALite: Oluyemi Ademokunwa’s love for volunteering inspires him to make a difference for those with mental health conditions

Oluyemi Ademokunwa’s interest in social work began with his love for volunteering. The Bachelor of Social Work Student at IU South Bend expressed great enthusiasm for church and school service events as a child. As he grew older, Oluyemi started volunteering for various community events, such as cleaning the city center and serving the less fortunate at the homeless shelter. Oluyemi even created a tiny neighborhood library that allowed him to donate books to his local women’s and children’s shelters.

Oluyemi’s interest in social work continued to develop as he began to see how his efforts improved others’ lives. Oluyemi first noticed this personally when he assisted his neighbors who were fleeing from a war-torn country. No matter how mundane, horrific, unique, or familiar their story was, Oluyemi listened to his neighbors in a genuine and non-judgmental manner. Oluyemi truly enjoys hearing people’s stories and providing comfort and advice when needed. It is moments like these that made Oluyemi realize the power of simply being there for someone, and it ultimately made his decision to pursue a career in social work that much easier.

When asked about his future goals, Oluyemi states that he would like to become a licensed clinical social worker to diagnose and treat mental health conditions. As a licensed social worker, Oluyemi will provide individual, family, and couples therapy, including assisting others with depression, anxiety, family troubles, and other mental health or behavioral issues. More specifically, Oluyemi would like to serve others whose lives have been upended by war, conflict, and natural disasters. Additionally, Oluyemi adds that he would also like to use his position as a social worker to address the opioid crisis.

Oluyemi credits the IU School of Social Work at South Bend for granting him the opportunity to work with a group of professionals who are committed to social justice. Oluyemi’s educational training has enabled him to enhance the well–being and quality of life of vulnerable individuals in communities. Over the years, the training Oluyemi has acquired from the IU School of Social Work at South Bend has provided him with a knowledge base that has positively impacted his life experiences and professional career.

As for now, Oluyemi is gaining experience in the social work field by helping people in his community obtain essential services needed during this time, while also participating in his local church community outreach.
