Susana Mariscal, Ph.D., MSW, Associate Professor, Indiana University School of Social Work

The IU School of Social Work is proud to announce that faculty member Susana Mariscal has been selected as an Outstanding IUPUI Woman Leader. This award is given out yearly as part of the National Women’s History Month observance on campus in March. Each year, women-identified faculty, staff, and students are recognized and celebrated for their achievements and contributions by the Office for Women and the Division of Student Affairs at an annual leadership reception. Mariscal was selected as a Woman Leader in the “newcomer” faculty category.

This year’s theme for National Women’s History Month is “Valiant Women of the Vote – Refusing To Be Silenced.” The theme continues last year’s commemoration of the Centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment granting voting rights to women since many of the women’s suffrage centennial celebrations originally scheduled for 2020 were curtailed due to the pandemic.

Dr. Susana Mariscal is a tremendous ambassador for the School and University. She partners with communities to not only study issues but to then develop programs that benefit women and their families. With a personal and professional commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, she seeks every opportunity to see the value in each individual and lift them up to achieve their potential,” Dean Davis says.

Mariscal joined the IU School of Social Work at IUPUI as an associate professor in Fall 2018. During her time at IUPUI, Mariscal has served on the IUPUI Faculty Council’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and its subcommittee on Promotion and Tenure. In addition, she is a member of the IUPUI Latino Faculty and Staff Council. Mariscal also serves as the project director for Strengthening Indiana Families, a program created to address childhood maltreatment in Indiana. Strengthening Indiana Families will be hosting their Virtual Kickoff Event on April 6, 2021, at 12:00 pm. Her extraordinary effort and achievement in service to IUPUI and its mission allowed Mariscal to earn this award.

Dr. Susana Mariscal leads through example. Through a spirit of gratefulness and generosity, she exemplifies action, initiative, commitment to the success of others, service to her communities, and achievement.” Dean Davis says.

Mariscal will be recognized as an Outstanding IUPUI Woman Leader through a virtual celebration on March 25, 2021, at 3:00 pm, which will include a keynote address on the National Women’s History Month theme and the presentation of recognition awards to nominated individuals.
