Indiana University – Bloomington Bachelor of Social Work student Madeline Elkins initially decided to pursue a degree in social work because of how versatile the career opportunities are. Madeline realized that social workers can be found in several settings, from hospitals to the government, and offer essential perspectives that are often lacking in workplaces.
Madeline’s dream career would be to work in the healthcare social work industry. Madeline has always wanted to work in healthcare believes she would flourish in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment such as a hospital or medical clinic.
Madeline aspires to learn more about human health and preventative services. Madeline has discovered that social work promotes the health and well-being of communities and individuals by tackling the roots of problems which is why she is committed to the work carried out by this profession.

Currently, Madeline works with clients as a State Health Insurance Assistance Program Counselor through her practicum at Area 10 Agency on Aging in Ellettsville, IN. Madeline is also partnered with Area 10’s Nutrition Services Department to assist with their Mobile Food Pantry and More Than a Meal (home-delivered meals) as needed. Lastly, Madeline will be completing her Senior Medicare Patrol Training during the Spring of 2021 to help Medicare beneficiaries prevent, detect, and report healthcare fraud, errors, and abuse.
The biggest lesson Madeline has learned is that it isn’t always easy or pretty, but your education is the one thing nobody can take away from you.
