Jordan Szorc, a Master of Social Work student in the Advanced Standing Program at Indiana University Northwest, did not realize that she had been using social work skills her whole life. When looking into degree options, social work kept coming up, and after taking an introductory class in the Bachelor of Social Work program, Jordan knew she was meant to be a social worker.

Jordan plans to use both of her degrees in social work to work in the school system. Jordan’s passions include suicide prevention and human trafficking awareness. Additionally, Jordan would love to start an after-school program for high schoolers called “Lighthouse” that focuses on self-care and suicide prevention, and awareness. Jordan decided to call this program “Lighthouse” as a lighthouse symbolizes strength, safety, and individuality.

Currently, Jordan is practicing social work through her internship at an elementary school, where she is allowed to lead groups, including a girl’s group that focuses on empowerment. Jordan also volunteers with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In addition, Jordan has hosted fundraisers for suicide research and advocated for prevention.

The most important lesson Jordan has learned since being a part of the IU School of Social Work is the importance of self-care. Jordan sees how social workers put their hearts on the line and how it is easy for social workers to forget themselves. Jordan believes that it’s essential for social workers to understand that they need support as well.

Jordan’s favorite quote is:
“Everyone has inside a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!” ― Anne Frank
