IUPUI senior in the Bachelor of Social Work program, Jordyn Kwitschau, chose social work as her major area of study after developing a passion for bringing a voice to those who feel like they do not have one. Through Jordyn’s continuous work with special ability kids, working as a peer mentor for students with mental health issues, and as a volunteer for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and Ronald McDonald Houses, this passion of hers was able to blossom.

As an undergraduate, Jordyn stays involved in several different organizations and clubs. Jordyn spends most of her time participating in sorority and fraternity as a member of Phi Mu, where she has served in several leadership positions within her sorority. Currently, she serves as Vice President for the Greek Leadership Honor Society, Order of Omega. Jordyn’s leadership position has helped make her transition to college easier, providing her with opportunities to meet many new and incredible people every day.

Through Jordyn’s leadership positions within her sorority, Jordan was encouraged to pursue an internship her junior year as a Research Intern for the IU Health Department of Neonatology. As a research intern for IU Health Department of Neonatology, Jordyn interacted with families going through the most challenging and heartbreaking moments in their lives. Jordyn strove to offer these people love and genuine compassion as she hopes she would receive if she were in their shoes. This experience helped Jordyn solidify her decision to choose social work as her career path. Jordyn says that helping people in their darkest times is what she believes she was born to do. Experiencing firsthand what Jordyn hopes to be doing in the future has deepened her appreciation for the profession.

This year, Jordyn is completing her practicum through the Office of Health and Wellness Promotion at IUPUI. This role has opened Jordyn’s eyes to how diverse and adaptable the world of social work can be. Jordyn shared her views on the Covid-19 Pandemic and how it affects college students at the Indiana Collegiate Action Network Annual Conference. Jordyn has also had the opportunity to share how being a working social work student has helped her in her studies with MCCOYouth, and developed her person-centered practice through her time as a health and wellness coach.
