IU School of Social Work Statement on the 2021 National Conference on Police Social Work
While the IU School of Social Work (IUSSW) acknowledges that the 2021 National Conference on Police Social Work sponsored by the City of Bloomington and Bloomington Police Department is taking up important matters regarding this difficult work, we also recognize that differing views regarding policing and the role of social work exist in our field. And, while we do have faculty presenting their scholarship at this conference, the IUSSW is not a sponsor of this conference.
The IUSSW has always sought to serve as an institution of higher education where all perspectives and views of social issues can be critically considered. Upon reviewing the entire conference agenda and determining that the scheduled presentations offer a fairly limited perspective of engaging police and social work, we made the decision to not provide CEUs for this specific conference.
As an alternate opportunity, and in keeping with our tradition of holding space for all perspectives on critical social justice issues, the IUSSW will host a forum where participants can earn free CEUs as they learn and have open dialogue about a broad array of positions around the relationship between Social Work and Police. We will provide details for this upcoming program soon.
