Because You Matter Program: Changing the way healthcare services are delivered in rural areas #
Imagine living in a rural area with limited access to healthcare services, especially during a pandemic. You need to visit a doctor, but the thought of traveling long distances, taking time off from work, and facing other associated hassles makes it seem impossible. But what if there was a solution that could provide the care you need, without any of the hassle? That’s where the “Because You Matter” team comes in.
Partnering with the Indiana University Center for Rural Engagement and the State of Indiana’s Office of Community & Rural Affairs, the “Because You Matter” team recognized the potential of post-pandemic telepractice visits in providing quality mental health services. They saw that telepractice visits not only achieve similar results as office-based visits but also increase access to care while saving time, travel, and other hassles associated with traditional healthcare visits.
Through a special secure teleconferencing program, adults aged 18 years and older can now schedule telepractice appointments with social workers from Indiana University School of Social Work. These appointments are kept safe, private, and confidential, just like a visit to your doctor’s office. The social worker uses a room that is reserved just for you, a secure webcam, and a computer network to ensure your privacy and comfort.
But that’s not all. The “Because You Matter” team also provides practical training opportunities for social work students. These students, who expressed interest in the team, were carefully interviewed to determine if their interests and the project aligned. Upon acceptance, they completed the school’s own training in telepractice and received ongoing training from the team and other academics and practitioners to enhance their skill set.
This innovative solution is not only changing the way healthcare services are delivered in rural areas but also inspiring social work students to gain practical skills and make a positive impact in their communities. Thanks to the “Because You Matter” team, patients can now receive the care they need, while social work students can gain valuable experience and contribute to their communities’ well-being.
