Greetings Indiana University School of Social Work community!

As we step into February, we embark on a journey of celebration, remembrance, and empowerment. February is not just any month—it’s a time dedicated to honoring the profound contributions of Black and African American individuals throughout history. It’s Black History Month, an opportunity to reflect on the resilience, achievements, and enduring spirit of the Black community that have shaped the historical trajectory of social work and continue to inspire and guide us today.

This February, at the IU School of Social Work, we are proud to unveil our theme: “Black in Social Work.” Through this series, we aim to illuminate the invaluable impact of Black Social Workers, both past and present, who have left an indelible mark on our profession—locally, nationally, and internationally.

I am deeply heartened by the overwhelming response we received when we reached out to our community for nominations. Your enthusiasm and engagement resulted in nearly 50 nominations of remarkable individuals. While we’ve selected 29 individuals to spotlight this month, I want to emphasize that our commitment to honoring trailblazers extends beyond February. We will continue to shine a light on other influential figures throughout the year, ensuring their legacies endure.

I invite each of you to join us on this journey of discovery and celebration. Let’s take a moment to honor the visionaries, the advocates, and the changemakers who have paved the way for us all. Delve deeper into the lives and contributions of these extraordinary leaders. Let their stories ignite your passion, fuel your determination, and remind you of all the profound impact one person can have in making the world a better place.

As we embark on this journey of reflection and celebration, may we be inspired by the courage, compassion, and commitment of Black and African American Social Workers. Let their stories inspire us to strive for a more inclusive and equitable society—one where every voice is heard, valued, and uplifted. Thank you for being part of our community and for embracing the richness of Back history and heritage.

With gratitude and solidarity,

Dr. Jennifer McChristian, LCSW
