Always Be Sharp: the Search for Music

Explore art and music in different cultures while looking at objects on view with a guide.

Objects that may be featured include a Māori flute, drums from the Austral Islands and New Ireland, a Mayan bell, an Egyptian castanet, sculptures of seated female Chinese musicians playing a pipa and a piaxiao, a musical instrument from Gabon, a portrait of a traditional Mexican conchero playing an armadillo-shell lute, and more.  

About your guide:

Kathie Durkel has volunteered as a Guide at the Eskenazi Museum of Art for more than ten years. She is the 2023 recipient of the Meier Award for the guide of the year in recognition for her exemplary service, enthusiasm, and commitment to learning, which have made a distinctive contribution to the Eskenazi Museum of Art Guide Program. She has created this tour looking at the music across multiple cultures.
