Child Abuse and Neglect Certificate

The curriculum is designed to increase understanding of human diversity and family dynamics, as well as how factors like poverty and substance abuse can play a role in abuse and neglect.

Open to IU Indianapolis undergraduates in any major, the program is relevant to students pursuing a career in social work, but also to those in nursing, education, psychology, sociology and other fields.
Certificate Requirements #
The Certificate in Child Abuse and Neglect requires students to have a grounding in basic theory about human diversity, growth, and development across the life cycle, basic knowledge of the development of public and private social services and specific content on child abuse and neglect and family dynamics. A minimum of 21 credit hours are required (24 for non-BSW) for the certificate, of which 12 credit hours must be from social work courses.Students are expected to participate in the service learning component of S180 and/or S201 to maximize their learning during coursework.
Once Admitted, Requirements
- The Child Abuse and Neglect Certificate student will need to maintain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- The Child Abuse and Neglect Certificate student must have at least a “C” in core certificate courses.

- SWK-S 251 History and Analysis of Social Welfare Policy (3 cr.) or Y 213 Introduction to Public Policy (3 cr.)
- SWK-S 305 Introduction to Child Protection (3 cr.)
- SWK-S 180 Exploring Child Welfare in Indiana (3 cr.)
- Non BSW Students are REQUIRED to take SWK-S 201 Introduction to Case Management (3 cr.)

Admission Requirements #
- A regular Admission to the University
- Applicant needs to have a minimum of 26 credit hours to be considered for admission
- Currently pursuing of an undergraduate degree or completion of an undergraduate degree
- A minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Waiver Process
If you do not have 26 hours completed or a GPA of 2.5, please do not allow this to stop you from applying. However, it does mean that you must include Petition for Exceptional Consideration with your application.
