Cultural Awareness Town Hall: Gender Affirming Care
The Cultural Awareness Town Hall is a formal speaker series that takes place biannually, focusing on relevant issues relating to current events and the health care profession concerning diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Previous topics have encompassed intellectual disability rights, the intersection of religion and health care, engagement of academic medicine in national politics, and strategies to combat bias. Attendees of this town hall include the school’s leadership, faculty, staff, students, trainees, as well as members of our health care systems.
Gender Affirming Care - State of the Art will be an overview of current approaches for the treatment of gender dysphoria in adults. In addition to a receiving overview of cultural competency, attendees will learn the essentials of surgical care for the adult transgender patient.
Dr. Gallagher is double board certified in both general and plastic surgery. Originally from Ireland Gallagher earned her medical degree from University College in Dublin, where she graduated in the top three percent of her class. Gallagher came to the United States, where she completed eight more years of intensive surgical training. She served as an assistant professor at Indiana University from 2015 to 2020 where she researched and developed new techniques such as Masculoplasty. During this time she trained many medical students and plastic surgeons. A leader in the field of gender affirmation surgery, Gallagher has founded both the Eskenazi Health Transgender Health and Wellness Program, as well as the program at Indiana University Health.
