She was placed at a non-profit youth center on the Near East Side of Indianapolis, Indiana and developed literacy programs for preschool and elementary school aged children as well as senior citizens. In addition, she worked on several neighborhood beautification projects and wrote small grants to fund a computer lab at the youth center. Mary was promoted to Director of the youth center after her time with AmeriCorps, and spent the next five years developing programs and partnerships, and overseeing daily operations. In 2005, she pursued a new career with the Indiana Department of Child Services and also started the MSW program at IUSSW. During her career at DCS, Mary was a Family Case Manager, a Supervisor, and was a Division Manager for a year and a half before leaving DCS in October 2014 to join the IUSSW Child Welfare Education and Training Partnership. She served as a task and field instructor at DCS for BSW practicum students, and also worked with IUSSW staff to enhance the BSW IV-E Scholars practicum program at Marion County DCS. Mary has also been teaching at IUSSW as an adjunct professor since 2011.
