Bio/Education
Samantha is the Associate Director of the Office of e-Social Work Education and Practice for the Indiana University School of Social Work. She currently holds a Master of Social Work from Indiana University, and is clinically licensed to practice in Indiana. Samantha manages the e-Social Work Practice Graduate Certificate program, and is a developer and coordinator of the e-simulations (online Objective Structured Clinical Examinations [e-OSCEs], online behavioral branching exercises, virtual reality, etc.) for IUSSW. She works in collaboration with the Director of the Office of e-Social Work Education and Practice on online course development and design, e-social work practice initiatives, online continuing education opportunities, and by assisting in the offering of the Distance Education Community of Practice for IUSSW. She works in collaboration with the course designers, the IUSSW web developer, eLearning and Design Services, and the Center for Teaching and Learning, and IUSSW faculty on online course design and faculty training in online courses and e-simulations for IUSSW. She teaches the e-social work and telebehavioral health practice courses, mental health and addictions, generalist theory and practice, and leadership courses. Samantha is a Ph.D. candidate with the Indiana University School of Social Work, is minoring in adult education with an emphasis on technology in higher education, and is anticipated to complete her studies in 2021.
Area of Interest
Samantha enjoys researching in areas of e-Social Work practice and education innovations. This includes the development and implementation of distance education technology innovations in online programs and courses; designing, implementing, and evaluating e-simulations in online social work practice courses; asynchronous and synchronous interactivity standards in distance education; effective practice skills development in online higher education courses; faculty engagement and training in distance education; and social work distance education program development.
Due to Samantha's background in the healthcare field, she also pursues research opportunities that focus on women's health disparities, systemic barriers in healthcare prevention programs, and using technology innovations to improve health outcomes of socioeconomically disadvantaged and vulnerable populations.
Teaching Interest
Samantha's teaching interests are in e-social work practice, telebehavioral health services, face-to-face social work practice, mental health and addictions, social work leadership, and introduction to the field of social work.
Practice Experience
Samantha's practice experience focused on the healthcare field and medical social work practices. She is a licensed clinical social worker in Indiana that is certified in culturally competent mental health services through Fairbanks and certified as a clinical telehealth practitioner (CTH) in Indiana. Her experience includes crisis intervention and trauma-informed care through her work in the emergency department of a Level I trauma center. Samantha currently provides telemental health services to college students as an independent clinician. Samantha has also worked as a medical social worker for the NICU, high-risk OB, and labor and delivery units at the largest health organization in Indiana. With women's health being of particular interest in her practice, she continued her work in healthcare as a medical social worker addressing barriers to treatment and care for socioeconomically disadvantaged and vulnerable populations seeking treatment of cancers that most commonly affect women. During this time, she wrote for and received grant funding to address these barriers, assisted in program development, and worked with a multidisciplinary team to address the needs of these patients.
