Greetings from the Dean’s Office,
Welcome to the Indiana University School of Social Work community. We are pleased to have you with us. Indiana University has educated social work students since 1911. Our accredited programs are recognized among the top in the United States.
Practicum education plays a central role in preparing students for professional social work practice. High-quality practicum experiences depend on collaboration. Students, practicum instructors, task instructors, and faculty liaisons all contribute to this shared learning process.
The Council on Social Work Education, the field’s accrediting body, defines practicum as the “signature pedagogy” of social work education. Practicum is where classroom learning is applied in real settings. Students develop both technical and relational skills through direct practice.
In practicum, students move beyond simulated learning environments. They engage in real service work and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways. This experience strengthens critical thinking and supports professional growth.
As educators, we are responsible for preparing students for practice after graduation. Accreditation requires programs to assess student learning across nine core competencies. These competencies are evaluated through both classroom and practicum experiences.
Assessment also creates opportunities for feedback and reflection. Students work closely with experienced professionals who guide their development. Practicum provides a valuable setting to practice skills and receive support.
We hope your practicum experience deepens your learning and builds on your classroom knowledge. Best wishes for a meaningful and rewarding practicum journey.
